Leonildo Pieropan
On a recent fact finding mission to Italy I had the pleasure of spending some time walking the vinyards and tasting the wines at one of Soaves greatest producers Leonildo Pieropan.
After a stroll through the La Rocca Vineyard (pictured here) we were amazed to hear that they did not plan to harvest the La Rocca vineyard until the end of October. They are always looking for ripeness but they also don’t mind a bit of botrytis as well.
We then set about tasting the wines and what a set of wines they were...
Pieropan Soave Classico 2007 £10.99 - A wonderfully drinkable wine. Very fresh and clean, some aromatic richness and in another 3 months or so I feel it will fatten up a touch more.
Pieropan Soave Calvarino Classico 2006 £15.99 - Some of the first vineyards that they bought similar to the above just much more complex. I really loved this and if you have never tasted a proper Soave then you have got to give this a go.
Pieropan La Rocca Soave Classico 2006 £20.99 Amazing wine extra weight due to been a latter harvest and of course some oak richness. Still extremely clean and fresh though. Should be kept for a few more years to really start showing its stuff and I reckon this would be sublime with a pan-fried scallop dish.
Pieropan Le Colombare Recioto di Soave 2004 £19.99 - This was everything we look for in a sticky, sweet and rich yes, but some lovely fresh balancing acidity that pulls the whole thing together. Perfect with some Panettone or if you fancied some classic Italian cheese.
I have certainly fallen back in love with the wines of Soave and you would be hard pushed to find any better examples than these.
If your interested in any of the above wines drop us an email or phone the shop on 01423 522270.
