Bodegas Roda and Bodegas La Horra offer and instore tasting 8th June

    Posted on

Bodegas Roda were classed as new wave when they first started producing wine in the Rioja region back in the late 1980s. They tore up the rule books and kept one eye on the past but very much embraced modern techniques in the quest for quality. Now it seems like they have always been around and there are even newer kids on the block taking the accolades of new wave, but if you are searching for the start of the Rioja revolution then Roda must be one of the first places you would look.Bodegas Roda are obsessed about Tempranillo. They identified 552 individual clones but ended up selecting only 20 that they wanted to work with. All the vines, are located in the best ecosystems of La Rioja Alta.

Bodegas Roda Sela 2015 £19.99 made from young vines which are still between 15 and 30 years old. They use Tempranillo and Graciano grapes and age the wine for 12 months in semi-new French oak. More on the red fruit side, but some darker fruits creep in. The wine is fresh and elegant but still plenty of fruit and depth. Serve with rich meats like venison or beef.

Bodegas Roda Reserva 2013 £32.99 made from over 30-year-old vines from mainly Tempranillo with a splash of Graciano. This time the wine spends 14 months in semi-new oak and then spends a further 3 years aging in the bottle. More powerful and concentrated than the Sela and certainly more complex but still shows a lovely elegant touch. Again to get the best out of the wine a rich hearty meal would be perfect.

Bodegas Roda 1 2012 £54.99 Again made from old vines that are over 30 years of age, the Tempranillo grapes come from their choice vineyards near to Haro in the heart of La Rioja Alta. Aged for 16 months in 50% new and 50% used wood. Deep, broody and complex, with stunning length. More structure of course but the tannins are so well-balanced. Still unmistakably Roda, it is a very serious wine which is just crying out for a special meal.

Bodegas Roda Cirsion 2016 £200 This is made with a splash more Graciano (14%) and Tempranillo of course, but what really sets this apart is that they select each vine individually which shows a noticeably different style to the ones around it. This might be about one in a thousand vines that end up in Cirsion. These special vines have more fullness and volume. The wine is then given only 8 months in oak to preserve the character of the fruit but this really does emphasise the elegance. World-class wine, and really pushing the boundaries of the region.

Bodegas Roda 1 2004 £63.99 A library release which we are lucky to get our hands on. This shows all the Roda quality but with a decade of development. Layer after layer of complex fruit and tannins mellowed out with age. Jancis Robinson said: ‘’Fine and concentrated, and soars above the Rioja norm. Probably a bit annoying locally.’’ which is probably an understatement.

    Bodegas La Horra

Taking what they learnt at Bodegas Roda they set out looking for some vineyards in the Ribera del Duero in 1999 and after a lot of searching found the historic Bodegas La Horra. The vines in the top wines are over 50 years old and as you expect Tempranillo is the king here as it is in Rioja. A lot of the techniques used in Rioja are duplicated ending up with another stunning range of wines.

Bodegas La Horra Corimbo 2014 £24.99 This is made from 20-year-old vines and the wine spends 14 months in oak, 80% which is French and 20% American. The wine is rich and complex and super-smooth as you would expect from these guys.

Bodegas La Horra Corimbo I 2013 £51.99 The top wine they make, and this time from 50-year-old vines. The wine spends 14 months in oak and again 80% is French and the rest is American. This has such a complex flavour, combining red and dark fruits with a lovely herby angle. The tannins are soft and very luxurious. Accessible in its youth but clearly good enough to age as well.
