    Niepoort declare 2017 Vintage Port

“The 2017 Vintage Port is epic and a triumph,
the best I’ve witnessed in all my years at Niepoort..."
    Dirk Niepoort

While most of the Port world laid claims on the 2016 vintage release, Niepoort have opted for the 2017 vintage. It’s easy to see why when Dirk himself uses words like ‘epic and a triumph’ and ‘the best I’ve witnessed in all my years at Niepoort’. The 1945 is always considered the most perfectly balanced of all Niepoort vintages and Dirk feels this 2017 is right up there.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to the UK release where we had the chance to taste the young Port as well as taking a look back at other vintages and Garrafeiras with a masterclass by Dirk himself. We can honestly say it is a very special vintage indeed, as the elegance and balance are off the scale. It will drink well in its youth, but such is the quality and power we would confidently give this a long future as only the very best Ports will do.

2017 Niepoort Vintage Port £315 per six (in bond)

All the components for 2017 Vintage Port were trodden by foot in circular granite "lagares" at Vale de Mendiz, 100% stems were included in the vinification. The wines were racked soon after harvest, aged in "tonéis" in the Douro over the winter, and then moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2018.

This is a Port that is concentrated and intense with beauty and shining through. The tannins are perfect with a fruit component that is austere, precise and alive. The spirit is exquisitely integrated, and the resulting finish is long, seductive and persistent. All its components are wonderfully balanced, a veritable orchestra in harmony.
