The grapes were harvested by hand at full physiological ripeness, with a focus on low yields to maximize concentration. Fermentation was carried out using predominantly whole-bunch clusters, and the wine was aged in large neutral French oak foudres and concrete tanks for approximately 12–14 months to preserve varietal purity and freshness while allowing integration of structural elements.

The wine exhibits a deep ruby color, with primary aromatics of blackberry, plum, dark red berries and Mediterranean herbs, complemented by secondary notes of white pepper, subtle spice and floral hints. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with chalky, fine-grained tannins, moderate alcohol, and vibrant natural acidity that provides balance and lift. A pronounced mineral thread reflects the stony Swartland terroir. The finish is long, precise, and focused, and the wine is considered suitable for medium to long-term cellaring, capable of developing additional complexity over 8–12 years.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0490/2354/9604/files/0D523926-AB48-4BC6-9BE5-495EDFC64DAA.jpg?v=1764773521
2023-porseleinberg-syrah-swartland
2023 Porseleinberg Syrah Swartland

The 2023 Porseleinberg Syrah is a compelling expression of Swartland’s rugged, schist-rich terroir, combining intensity with precision. Callie Louw works with whole-bunch fermentation and he reintroduced a gentle pump-over and keeps the cap submerged, enhancing aromatic lift and textural detail. This really tamed the tannins and increased it drinkability massively. The nose is complex and savoury, showing incense, thyme, black pepper and dark berry fruit, layered with notes of liquorice and wild herbs that reflect the vineyard’s windswept character. On the palate the wine is concentrated yet poised, with flavours of blackberry and red cherry carried by a stony mineral drive, firm, age-worthy tannins and a vibrant core of acidity. Subtle spice and saline nuance add depth, leading to a long, focused finish that balances power with finesse. A Syrah of structure, texture and unmistakable sense of place, built for graceful ageing.

The 2023 Porseleinberg Syrah marks the final vintage blended by Callie Louw, before his departure from the estate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0490/2354/9604/files/0D523926-AB48-4BC6-9BE5-495EDFC64DAA.jpg?v=1764773521
