    HARROGATE WINE SCHOOL WSET ACCREDITED COURSES

    We are looking forward to welcome you to our new Wine School above our shop in the centre of Harrogate. We recently gained accreditation status with WSET and are now authorised to teach Level 1, 2 and 3 courses in wine. Our Level 1 course would make an excellent gift for a wine lover or for those starting a career in wine. The Level 2 course is ideal for someone who wants to further their knowledge of wine or a wine professional. The Level 3 course is an advanced level course for wine professionals and the dedicated enthusiast. Of course whilst academic they will be taught in tutor Phil Ball's relaxed style. Because we own a wine shop and have our own dedicated tasting room we can plough more money into the wines you taste offering you a fuller learning experience.

    WSET Level 1 in Wines

    Course Dates

    Saturday 19 September 2020 9am - 4pm

    Saturday 17 October 2020 9am - 4pm

    Saturday 21 November 2020 9am - 4pm

    A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine. For individulas new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you’ll receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

    What you’ll learn:

    • The main type and styles of wine
    • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
    • How to store and serve wine
    • The principles of food and wine pairing
    • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine*(SAT)

    Course Delivery

    The qualification has a minimum requirements of six hours of study assessment time in a classroom with a WSET provider.

    Assesment

    Assessment is by closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions.This qualification is regulated by Ofqua

    Entry Requirements

    There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age in the UK to participate in the wine tasting. However this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification.

    WSET Level 2 in Wines

    Course dates

    Sundays between 27 Sept 2020 - Sunday 11 Oct 2020 (3 consecutive Sundays) 9am - 4pm

    Mondays between 12 October 2020 -  Monday 30 November 2020 (8 consecutive Mondays) 7pm- 9pm

    WSET’s Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner to intermediate level qualification, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.

    This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally importantt grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

    What you’ll learn

    How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine* (SAT)

    How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:

    • Chardonnay
    • Pinot Grigio/Gris
    • Sauvignon Blanc
    • Riesling
    • Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Merlot
    • Pinot Noir
    • Syrah/Shiraz

    The style and quality of wines

    • Made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
    • Produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world

    How grape varieties and wine making processes influence key styles of:

    • Sparkling Wines
    • Fortified Wines

    Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style, and quality

    Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine

    Principles of food and wine pairing

    Course Delivery

    This qualification has a minimum requirement of 28 hours* of study time:

    • 16 hours of delivery time with a WSET course provider
    •  11 hours of personal study and revision
    •  A 1-hour examination

    Assessment

    A one-hour closed-book examination comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions.

    On successful completion of the examination you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

    Entry requirements

    There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age in the UK to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification.

    WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

    An advanced level qualification for professionals working in the wine industry and for wine enthusiasts.

    For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making. Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

    What you'll learn

    Unit 1

    • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
    • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal
      • still wines of the world
      • sparkling wines of the world
      • fortified wines of the world
    • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

    Unit 2

    • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

    Course Delivery

    • This qualification has a minimum requirement of 84 hours of study time, including 30 hours of classroom with a WSET course provider.*

    Assessment

    • Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines.
    • This qualification is regulated by Ofqual

    Entry requirements

    • It is recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge. You must be of legal drinking age in the country where you are attending the course and exam to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing Unit 1.
    • Requirements may vary by course provider.
