Christmas Newsletter 2019
crazy just how fast this year has flown by and we can not believe we
are writing a Christmas newsletter again. That said this is the most
exciting time of the year for us, the quality of the wine we stock and
sell always goes up a notch or two. So in this newsletter we will
highlight some of our favourite wines for this time of the year as well
as a welcome return to our end of year shindig where we dig deep into
our cellars to put on rare and old wines by the glass at well under
market value. Of course we will talk about the odd Port or two and no
Christmas would be the same without a drop of Rioja with your Christmas
AZABACHE GRAN RESERVA RIOJA 2007 £21.99…. At this time of the year one of our best selling wines is Rioja, it’s easy to see why with its medium bodied nature and mature fruit profile it slots in nicely with most meals over the Christmas period. So we were really pleased to find a parcel of this Gran Reserva 2007 that ticks all the boxes for Gran Reserva Rioja and is also extremely well priced at £21.99. We have good stocks at the moment but it is limited.
DOMAINE CAPION LE CHEMIN DES GARENNES ROUGE £16.99…. Another favourite of ours this year is this wonderful red from the Languedoc. It couldn’t be better situated on the Terrasses du Larzac and next door to the legendary Mas de Daumas Gassac. It is made from a classic local blend 37% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 23% Cinsault, 15% Mourvèdre and is rich and full bodied. The tannins are soft and polished. Stick it in a jug for an hour to see the wine at its best. At £16.99 this is a great wine and even better we can do 15% off six bottles, so down to £14.45 per bottle.
OLD AND RARE BY THE GLASS EVENT….
Saturday 21st December 6pm until 9pm
Tickets are £10 which will be refunded on the night against your first drink.
Our old and rare by the glass event has become a bit of a tradition since we moved from our old shop. As in previous years we will dig deep in our cellars to find old bottles and sell them by the glass at their original retail price not what they are actually worth today. This of course does mean you can enjoy glasses of these rare and old wines at well below market price.
As always we will have some charcuterie, pâté and cheese boards that can be purchased on the night for £9.95 per board or a mega board for £25.
The wines will include red and white Burgundy, some old Bordeaux, Cotat, Sancerre and old Boekenhoutskloof to name a few.
Tickets can be purchased in store.

BOLLINGER 007…. To mark 40 years of association with James Bond, Bollinger have released a limited quantity of their Millésimé 2011 £150 per bottle. It is made from 100% Pinot Noir all from Aÿ (Grand Cru) and is totally fermented in oak barrels. It’s a great vintage with more intensity coming from the Pinot Noir. As with all 007 releases it is packaged in a gorgeous wooden presentation box. All in all it’s rather special and a must have bottle for any Bollinger or Bond lover.
ENGLISH FIZZ… To us Furleigh Estate is one of the best English Sparkling wines around and certainly one of the best priced. We have two wines from them. A Classic Cuvee £28.99 which is made from the classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and is very fine and elegant. They also make a Blanc de Noir £29.99 made with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, it’s richer and more toasty and again a fantastic wine at just under £30.
Lastly we have a great rosé from Gusbourne £45.99, more depth than some and has extremely long length. Certainly one of the best English rosé wines we have tried.
PORT, SHERRY AND MADEIRA… Nothing beats a cheeky little glass of something after dinner (or before) and these are some of our current favourites. Taylors Terra Feita 2005 £29.99 single Quinta and drinking great now. Taylors Vintage 2003 £77.99 arguably one of the best wines made in 2003, full bodied and powerful. Hidalgo Manzanilla Pastrana £16.99 is an older Manzanilla so there’s more body and depth, perfect while cooking Christmas dinner. Hidalgo 20 Year Palo Cortado £29.99 everything that makes sherry so great, and a fine example of Palo Cortado. Barbeito 10 Year Verdelho £38.99 medium dry makes for the perfect aperitif. Barbeito 2002 Malvasia £43.99 lush with fantastic acidity, the perfect end to any meal.
A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE…. If you fancied something more alternative this Christmas then these may be for you. More and more we are asked about natural wines and much of what we tasted in the past was faulty at best. But now we feel the genre is finding its feet and there is a cleanness running through the wines as well as a funky side.
Obvius Bianco £19.99 made from Trebbiano and Vermentino in a state of the art winery using no sulphites and the wine is unfiltered. It has a fresh zing and certainly a wild streak. Reminds us of an Oude Geuze beer with more fruit. Nat'COOL Branco £19.99 - Dirk Niepoort has always pushed boundaries and this Vinho Verde is bottled with a touch of residual sugar so it has a secondary fermentation in the bottle, giving it a lovely spritz. Wild and cool for sure. Nat'COOL Baga £19.99 Awesome light version of Bairrada made with Baga. The wine just feels so (excuse the pun) natural and easy to drink. A fun red wine perfect for a lazy long lunch with friends.
DR LOOSEN TUTORED TASTING WITH ERNST LOOSEN THURSDAY 23RD JANUARY 2020… A date for your diary! It was back in 2005 when we last did an event with Ernie Loosen and his amazing wines, so we jumped at the chance when he offered to do a tasting again. It will be tutored by Ernie himself and we will taste a cross section of Dr Loosen wines. We’ll gather at 7.00pm for an aperitif with the tasting starting at 7.15pm and will serve some simple salami and cheese during the evening. Tickets are £15 - book early as we expect demand to be high!
