A tasting we’ve wanted to do for ages. Harrogate Wines offers you the unique chance to taste what we think are the best English sparkling wines. Indeed the 2014 Blanc de Blancs released a few months ago is without doubt the best English sparkling wine we have tasted to date and takes them to another level. Gusbourne also make some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the country has to offer in very limited quantities. A few of the wines on show are only available from the Gusbourne cellar door, so it’s a privilege to have them on show in Yorkshire.
In 2004, Andrew Weeber took over the Gusbourne estate with a clear vision and a single goal: to create English sparkling wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offerings from across the globe. The first vines were planted that year. The quality just keeps getting better and better and those little differences they adopt each year really are starting to pay dividends.
The two quotes below say it all:
“Our vision is simple. We strive to create the finest wines in the world.”
“At Gusbourne we embrace tradition but readily challenge convention, even to make what might seem like very small differences to the finished wine. Attention to detail is often the difference between great and exceptional”.
Brut Reserve 2015 £37.99
This is a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (the three Champagne grape varieties) which spends a minimum of thirty-six months on lees and a further three months on cork before release. This gives a ‘backbone’ of Chardonnay acting as the structural component, Pinot Noir brings body and depth and finally Pinot Meunier which provides floral and additional fruity notes to the wine. Bright gold in colour, this blend highlights red fruit aromas of cherry and strawberry, which then develop into attractive fresh pastry notes with a touch of cinnamon and spice. With a bright streak of citrus fruit, the palate is clean and fresh while giving tons of soft stone fruit and a long, refreshing finish.
Rosé Reserve 2015 £45.99
A classic pale but fruity rosé made from a blend of estate-grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Delicate pink in appearance, with soft summer berries and floral notes on the nose. The palate shows bright red fruits, driven by ripe strawberries, fresh cherries and redcurrants, with a crisp freshness and creamy, rounded texture on the finish.
Blanc de Blancs 2014 £52.99
Their flagship wine, Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs, is made using hand selected (predominantly Burgundian clone) Chardonnay. The wine is aged for a minimum of forty-two months on lees and six months on cork before we deem it ready for release. This is unbelievably good, and could hold its own against champagne at twice the price!
Brut Reserve 2010 Late Disgorged (Library stock – sadly not for sale)
Something that the connoisseurs among you will enjoy. Think Bollinger RD (recently disgorged) and you’re somewhere near. From the 2010 vintage disgorged in late 2018, it’s a treat. This will only be available by the glass on the evening– sorry!!
Guinevere 2016 £29.99 (Limited Availability 1 bottle per customer)
This Chardonnay is in the Burgundian style, having crisp, vibrant, lemon citrus with intense buttery, toasted vanilla notes. Super-fresh, clean acidity matched flavours of lemon and tangy green orchard apples. The mid-palate is all about that creamy, buttery, vanilla goodness, which continues into the aftertaste. This is very different from the 2014 Guinevere which was much more reminiscent of a crisp Chablis.
Pinot Noir 2016 £29.99 (Limited Availability 1 bottle per customer)
The Pinot Noir is produced in carefully selected parcels using fruit exclusively from Gusbourne’s Boot Hill vineyard. The nose, thanks to maturation in French oak, boasts a pretty array of cranberry and raspberry with a delicate earthy note. The palate, whilst being nimble, offers layers of earthy red fruit with nicely judged spice and perfectly balanced acidity. They will only release this in years when they are totally happy with the quality.
