The Wines Of Bouchard Finlayson (available March 2019 only)

Established in 1989 by Peter Finlayson, Bouchard Finlayson is a boutique winery nestled in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (the name translates to Heaven and Earth), just outside Hermanus in the beautiful Western Cape of South Africa. For the last 10 years winemaker Chris Albrecht has produced some of the finest wines of the region. Located in the wine ward of Walker Bay, this 125 hectare property currently has 22 hectares under vine; the rest is mountainous terrain, covered by the spectacular indigenous ‘fynbos’ flora of the Western Cape.

We here at Harrogate Wines have long since been fans and followers of his wines especially his Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays and would therefore like to release a small offer of these wines.

Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay 2017 £17.99 per bottle The Crocodile Lair vineyard is hidden away in the Elandskloof Valley behind the village of Villiersdorp just 80kms from Hermanus. It’s located 700m above sea level and the grapes ripen a month later that most Cape Chardonnays. Structured with many-layered flavour components, this pleasing palate offers hints of lychee, white peach, kiwi fruit and tangerine, a memorable taste experience.

Missoinvale Chardonnay 2017 £23.99 per bottle The name Missionvale stems from the Mission hospital established on the domain property in the early 19th century . All the grapes are harvested from this estate to create one of the finest Chardonnays in the region. A commanding wine with solid backbone and a lengthy lingering palate. Flavours of pear and melon enhanced by peachy taste offer a lively and long-lasting finish. 29% new oak and maturation on primary lees took place for 11 months, which offers complexity and structure which will grow and embolden this wine over the coming years.

Walker Bay Pinot Noir 2014 £22.50 per bottle (Limited availability) There was no Galpin Peak Pinot Noir in 2014, because the wine was declassified and thus bottled as Bouchard Finlayson Walker Bay Pinot Noir. The wine is certainly a touch lighter but possesses a wonderful freshness.Malo-lactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels which further enhanced this wine’s body and structure. Only the best barrels were selected for the final cuvée. A particularly charming wine with pretty floral aromas and an expression of complex fruit development on the palate. More strawberry than dark fruits, this is one for early drinking. At this price a stunning bottle of Pinot Noir.

Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2016 £29.99 per bottle An abundance of grapes this vintage. A very expressive wine with a great middle palate, structure and notable maturation potential. After harvesting the grapes this was followed by an initial cold soak plus three weeks of maceration and fermentation. It was matured for 11 months in French oak barrels, 31% new. Powerful and muscular with a complex mix of red cherry fruit, the new oak adds nutmeg and cinnamon on the nose. Drinking gorgeously now, this will cellar well for five years.

Hannibal 2017 £25.99 per bottle This is a unique collection of varieties (45% Sangiovese, 18% Pinot Noir, 15% Nebbiolo, 12% Shiraz, 7% Mourvedre and 3% Barbera) but they all combine to achieve a harmonious orchestra of flavours where the essence of Italian food immediately comes to mind. Olive and redcurrant flavours combined with cranberry to result in a lingering finish and complex mouthful. A great bottle for that blind tasting!!
