The Historic Vergelegen Estate lies in the Helderberg region of South Africa. Boasting some of the most ancient viticultural soils in the world and a mild climate (the Atlantic is only 6km away), the estate is planted over some 158 hectares comprising cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, shiraz, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and semillon, and is expertly vinified by their winemaker in consultation with a leading French oenologist.
Vergelegen's winemaking philosophy is simple : There must be harmony between the old and the new.
Vergelegen Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2017 £18.50 The 2017 Schaapenberg Sauvignon Blanc is extremely aromatic with ripe passion fruit and ripe guava, blackcurrant leaf, a touch of lemongrass and good minerality. The aftertaste is long and clean. Very special reserve from a prized sea-facing hillside vineyard. Generous body with rich texture & fresh acidity.
Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve 2017 £18.50 Bright, very pale yellow. Some rather pungent smoky, nutty oak dissipates to reveal sexy scents of fresh stone fruits, orange blossom and gingery spices. Seamless, broad and rich. Almost glycerol in mouthfeel but firmed by its mineral underpinning. Finishes with sneaky, slowly-building length and lingering vanilla and spice oak notes.
Vergelegen GVB White 2016 £30.99 Tight, focused and beautifully integrated with herbal (fynbos) grapefruit flavours, ripe tropical notes and a long, focused aftertaste. Expressive, elegant Bordeaux blend (60/40 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc), 2016 reflects fine vintage with poise & balance, power & purity; luscious spiced fruit with herbal notes. Built to last, aged 10 months in French oak.
Vergelegen Reserve Shiraz 2015 £18.50 Stunningly ripe and concentrated berry fruit including ripe black cherry fruit, hints of liquorice, violets and spice. The flavours on the palate are intense and long lasting with soft tannins leading to a clean finish. 2015 is widely regarded as one of the all-time great vintages. The growing season was long and slow with just enough rain at the right moments.
Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 £18.99 The wine is complex, showing blackcurrants, spice, ripe plums and attractive wood aromas and flavours. It is full and rich with prominent tannins that bodes well for future ageing. Quintessential New World cab, 2013 ticks the boxes; big and muscular tending towards fruit ripeness & beguiling generosity, but also purity & restraint. Still youthful promising many years of development.
Vergelegen DNA 2013 £23.99 Cabernet Franc leads merlot & cabernet sauvignon in a serious nod to Bordeaux. 100% new French oak, elegant and restrained. Lead pencils, herbaceous whiffs, opening up in the glass to plush red berries. Seamless, polished, great finesse.
Vergelegen GVB Red 2012 £43.99 2012 rates as one of the very best vintages on record and as good as 1998 and 2000. The 2012 GVB was selected as the SA Champion Red Blend at the SA Young Wine Show of that year. Masterly Bordeaux blend; Cabernet led; 24 months new French barriques, yet already hinting at its potential. Plush blackcurrants, cedar/cigar box spicing, has latent power, will reward cellaring.
Vergelegen V 2012 £76.99 Made as a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon since 2008, this is the flagship red at Vergelegen and demonstrates André van Rensburg’s mastery of the variety. It’s a focused, classically proportioned red, combining freshness with concentration, suppleness with structure. Aromatic and refined, it has plenty more to give. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 is designed for ageing but so well crafted, power is latent rather than overt. Cassis at core, expected complex nuances to beguile collectors but plenty more to unfold over time.
Vergelegen Straw Wine 2015 £14.99 Dessert wine from dried grapes fermented on skins/stems and aged 15 months older barrels. A symphony of stonefruit, pineapple & orange marmalade, oak and an almond infusion. Sweet, but enough acidity to lengthen the palate.
