The 2020 Villa di Capezzana is a superb expression of Carmignano's unique heritage—a Tuscan red that marries native Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, not as a modern innovation but as a centuries-old tradition. Cabernet has been grown in Carmignano since the Medici era, making this one of the earliest regions in Italy to blend Bordeaux varieties into local wines.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with garnet highlights. Aromatically, it opens with ripe black cherry, plum, and red currant, underscored by notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and dried herbs. The Cabernet contributes structure, depth, and a subtle herbal nuance, enhancing the Sangiovese's natural brightness and red fruit character.
On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. The fruit is ripe but fresh, supported by savory earth tones, a whisper of oak spice, and a long, mineral-laced finish. The balance between power and elegance is classic Carmignano—refined and ageworthy.
Why Cabernet?
Cabernet Sauvignon has been a legal and traditional part of Carmignano blends for over 300 years. Introduced by the Medici family in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was formally recognized in the DOC (and later DOCG) regulations, making Carmignano one of the few Italian regions where Cabernet is not only permitted but historically embedded in the identity of the wine.
