The 2014 Château La Tour de By comes from a respected Cru Bourgeois estate in the northern Médoc, traditionally blending mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot (and a small portion of Petit Verdot).  In the glass it shows deep ruby-garnet colour and — after staying in bottle for several years — reveals classic Médoc character: black- and red-fruited aromas such as blackcurrant (cassis), blackberry and perhaps ripe plum evolve toward more tertiary notes: pencil-shaving, tobacco, forest floor or earthiness, and a touch of cedar or cigar-box. On the palate, it remains medium-bodied to moderately full, with well-integrated, mellowed tannins and a balanced acidity that gives freshness — the fruit remains evident but is supported by savoury, leafy, slightly herbal or menthol-tinged edges.
