2021 Escarpment 'Te Rehua' Pinot Noir
Te Rehua is one of Escarpment’s original single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, from a small, sheltered site close to Martinborough. The vineyard was planted in 1990 with a mix of Pinot Noir clones, and its warmer position and deep alluvial gravels produce this classic example of New World Pinot. The 2021 Te Rehua received 93 points from Wine Spectator, who highlighted its layered character and firm tannins.
The site lends itself to a darker fruit proflie, with black cherry, plum and spice alongside more savoury notes of forest floor and liquorice. There’s plenty of structure here, with firm tannins giving shape to the dense, dark fruit. A proportion of whole bunches is used in the winemaking, adding a little extra aromatic lift and keeping the wine focused.
