Pagodes de Cos is the second wine of Cos d’Estournel, and in 2017 it shows the estate’s trademark polish in a more approachable, earlier-drinking style. It’s classic Saint-Estèphe: structured, refined and quietly powerful, but with a softness and charm that makes it enjoyable now. A blend of mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The nose opens with dark berries, plum and a hint of graphite, followed by subtle spice and cedar. On the palate it’s smooth and focused, with ripe blackcurrant, wild herbs and a touch of cocoa. The tannins are firm but well-shaped, giving the wine definition without heaviness. Fresh acidity keeps everything lively, and the finish is long, savoury and satisfying.
A stylish Left Bank claret that’s drinking beautifully, especially with roast lamb, beef or simple dishes where the wine can shine.
