The Champion family have been growing grapes in Chouilly since the mid 18th century. Today it is run by Francois and his two daughters Clemence and Carole. Until recently most of their grapes have been sold to the big Champagne houses but luckily they have now decided to make more under their own label.
A poised, expressive vintage blanc de blancs Champagne from this respected Grand Cru producer in the Montagne de Reims. The 2016 shows both precision and depth, with a fine bead and clear sense of place.
On the nose there’s a mix of crisp green apple, pear and lemon zest, layered with brioche, toasted almond and a hint of fresh almond blossom. The palate is vibrant and focused, combining citrus and orchard fruit with a savoury, biscuity richness. Fine, creamy mousse leads to a long, clean finish with a touch of minerality and gentle spice. Balanced and elegant, this is a Champagne that’s ready to enjoy now but will reward patience.
