Our guide to one of Italy’s finest wine regions
Friuli Colli Orientale sits in Italy’s far north-east, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Among sommeliers and fine-wine buyers, it is widely regarded as one of Italy’s most serious wine regions – particularly for white wines of elegance, texture, and longevity.
For many people, however, it remains relatively unknown. That is part of its appeal. These wines offer a level of quality that will be familiar to drinkers of White Burgundy, Loire whites, and fine Italian wines, but without some of the hype.
At Harrogate Wines, we receive tiny annual allocations from a handful of leading Friuli producers. Quantities are limited, and once these wines are sold, we cannot usually replace them.
Friuli’s reputation is built on clarity and balance with some hidden power.
If you enjoy white Burgundy, fine Loire whites, or classic Italian reds, Friuli is a region well worth exploring.
Miani is one of Italy’s most highly regarded small producers. Run by Enzo Pontoni, the estate is known for extremely low yields and an uncompromising approach in the vineyard.
The wines – especially the whites – offer outstanding quality andare rated one of the very best white wine producers in Italy. They offer superlative texture and depth, yet they retain a distinctive Friulian character. Production is tiny, and demand consistently exceeds supply.
Why we rate them:
Ronco del Gnemiz is one of the most respected names in Friuli. The estate is owned and managed by Serena Palazzolo and has gained an international reputation for its distinctive, strictly limited, top quality wines. Her husband and fellow wine maker is Christian Patat, a highly regarded vigneron who works closely with Miani, and whose deep understanding of Friuli’s vineyards is reflected in the precision of these wines.
From Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay to indigenous varieties such as Friulano and Schioppettino, these are wines that are precise, balanced, and excellent quality.
Why we rate them:
Meroi wines are often characterized as being both rich and well-structured, with a vibrant acidity that enhances their full-bodied texture.
Why we rate them:
These comparisons help explain why Friuli has become a firm favourite among wine professionals.
These wines are offered in small quantities and are sold to us on an allocation basis. Once the current stocks are gone, we cannot guarantee availability of the same wines or vintages in future years.
If you enjoy discovering high-quality wines beyond the usual classics, this is an excellent opportunity to explore Friuli.
