Made from a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Carignan and Counoise, this expressive red comes from the hillsides surrounding Cairanne in the southern Rhône, where old vines, typically 40–70 years of age, grow in stony soils over a Miocene subsoil. Certified organic, Domaine Richaud’s flagship Cairanne combines the warmth and generosity of Mediterranean fruit with freshness, savoury complexity and finely textured tannins. Aged for ten months in a combination of concrete tanks, large oak foudres and demi-muids, the wine balances ripe fruit and spice with an elegant, understated oak influence.
Tasting note: Deep ruby red, with expressive aromas of ripe black cherry, red plum and blackberry, complemented by notes of violet, dark chocolate, Provençal herbs and liquorice. The palate is generous and beautifully rounded, with layers of juicy red and dark fruit supported by fresh acidity and supple, finely grained tannins. Hints of black pepper, savoury earth and Mediterranean spice add depth and complexity, leading to a long, gently warming finish with lingering liquorice and ripe fruit.
