Pieve Santa Restituta is Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, purchased in 1994 and now one of the most respected Brunello properties in the region. The estate sits on the south-west side of Montalcino with stony soils, good altitude, and cooling influences that help retain freshness in Sangiovese. Traditionally, the estate focused almost entirely on Brunello di Montalcino, producing the estate Brunello alongside the single-vineyard wines Rennina and Sugarille.
The Rosso di Montalcino is a brand new addition to the range using grapes from young Sangiovese vineyards recently acquired in Bolsignano and Villa a Toli. Grapes are vinified in concrete then aged for 12 months in an equal mix of concrete and large oak casks. This is a wine made for earlier drinking but the style here is always about purity, balance, and elegance rather than power.
Bright ruby in colour. The nose shows fresh cherry, wild strawberry and red plum, with hints of dried herbs, orange peel and light spice. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with lively acidity, fine tannins and a savoury edge typical of Sangiovese from Montalcino. Flavours of red cherry, cranberry, tobacco and a touch of earth lead to a fresh, balanced finish.
This is an elegant and food-friendly Rosso di Montalcino that drinks like a young Brunello in a more approachable style. Best served with roast meats, game, tomato-based dishes or mushroom pasta. Drink from 2026 onwards
