Before the advent of modern commercial refrigeration, brewing in Bavaria was legally banned during the hot summer months (23 April to 29 September) to prevent wild bacterial contamination. To ensure there was plenty of beer to drink over the summer, brewers produced a slightly stronger, highly hopped lager during the month of March (März). Traditionally Märzen was brewed in March, with more hops, malt and increased alcohol content so the beer would last until the end of September.
So this is a little bit fuller in body and more malty.
