The 2020 Hilt Bentrock Vineyard Chardonnay comes from a single-vineyard in the cool maritime Sta. Rita Hills AVA (California), where vines on poor soils yield concentrated Chardonnay with distinctive mineral and coastal influence. On the nose it reveals a seductive mix of truffle-honey, white raspberry, grilled peach, brioche and delicate white-flower perfume — ethereal yet alluring, combining fruit, floral and subtle savoury notes.
On the palate the wine balances density and tension: expect orchard and stone fruits (apricot, melon or pear), a mineral/oyster-shell salinity or chalky edge, a creamy lees-derived texture and vibrant acidity that gives drive and freshness. The finish is long, with layered fruit, salinity and that signature coastal tension — chalky, briny and refined, showing both elegance and structure. This Chardonnay works beautifully now — decanted slightly to open up — with richer seafood (shellfish, crab, lobster), grilled fish, soft-textured cheeses or dishes with herbs and butter. Given its structure, mineral core and balanced oak treatment, it also has good ageing potential (expect graceful evolution over 5–10 years or more in a good cellar).
