Nestled high in the Banghoek Valley with a stunning view of the 'Rondekop' hill, Oldenburg Vineyards stands as one of South Africa's most picturesque farms, crafting beautifully elegant wines that capture the essence of their terroir. The valley, situated in Stellenbosch, benefits from a unique microclimate characterized by cool temperatures, thanks to its elevation, ocean breezes, and encircling mountains.
Oldenburg’s premium Rondekop Series draws its name from Rondekop, the iconic hill situated in the middle of the Oldenburg property. Several Stone Age stone axes, estimated to be at least 100,000 years old, were unearthed on Rondekop – just under the Syrah vines that make this wine were planted. Stone Axe Syrah is made from only the best barrels from the Rondekop.
Hand-picked grapes were hand-sorted before fermentation which included foot treading and daily punch down. The wine was matured in Austrian oak foudres and older barrels.
The wine presents a burst of red fruit—raspberry, dark cherry, and redcurrant—accented by red pepper, star anise, rose petal, and violets. Mouthwatering acidity and rounded tannins create a compelling palate. This outstanding wine is approachable now and will cellar well for the next 15 years.
