Produced by Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this iconic wine is composed of Grenache, sourced from sandy, north-facing vineyards—a distinctive terroir that sets Rayas apart within the appellation. The estate is known for its traditional approach, with minimal intervention, fermentation in concrete and ageing in large, old oak foudres, preserving purity and site expression. The 2004 vintage, more classical and restrained, emphasises finesse, aromatic lift and balance over power.
Tasting note:
The wine shows a translucent ruby hue with notable evolution, reflecting its maturity. The nose is highly perfumed and complex, offering wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry, intertwined with dried rose, tea leaf, spice and subtle earthy notes.
On the palate it is medium-bodied and remarkably elegant, with silky, resolved tannins and fresh acidity providing structure and lift. Flavours of red berry fruit, blood orange and delicate herbal nuances unfold with precision, underpinned by a distinctive sandy mineral character. With time in bottle, tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and dried herbs add further depth. The finish is long, ethereal and finely balanced, emphasising purity and persistence over weight.
A beautifully mature Rayas, showcasing grace, aromatic complexity and a singular expression of Grenache, with continued ability to evolve in bottle.
