One of the very finest and best-known producers in Barbaresco, it is also regarded as one of the greatest wine cooperatives in the world. There are 58 member growers with a combined total of around 100 hectares of vineyards. Produttori del Barbaresco makes nine different single-vineyard (cru) riserva Barbarescos in better vintages. These are all vinified and aged in the same style to highlight the differences in terroir.
The 2017 Montestefano Riserva is the most intense and driven of the crus, opening with deep aromas of black cherry, dried rose and crushed herbs, layered with liquorice, tar and a warm, earthy note.
On the palate it’s powerful and tightly structured. Dark red fruit sits at the core, wrapped in firm, grippy tannins that give the wine real presence. There’s a savoury, almost iron-like edge alongside notes of spice and balsamic, adding depth and complexity.
The finish is long, bold and still quite compact, with a persistent grip and lingering notes of dark fruit, herbs and mineral. This needs time—both in the glass and in bottle—to fully come together, but it has all the depth and structure to reward patience.
