2018 Vasse Felix Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon / Malbec
This is the newish icon red made by Vasse Felix, for years the flagship red was of course Haytesbury but after analysis some blocks on the Home vineyard stood out as the original vines planted back when Vasse Felix first set up in 1967. The Cabernet vines planted came off a special block known as Houghton Cabernet Block back in 1930, these in turn where from the first Cabernet planted in Western Australia sometime between 1836 and 1895. Anyway lets just say these are special vines unique to Western Australia and have the capability of producing exceptional wines.
Named after Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity who pioneered the development of Margaret River when he first planted Vasse Felix.
This shows a lovely opulent exotic black fruit, plenty of spice. The tannins are wonderfully soft for a relatively young wine. In fact its so approachable you can dive right in. That said it should age really well or keep your hands off a few bottles to see where this heads.... we are certainly going to keep a few bottles back for a future tasting!
This 2018 is highly rated, scoring 99 points from three critics, so very hard to find now.
