This 2019 is a little piece of Vergelegen history as this was one of the last few vintages winemaker André van Rensburg did at Vergelegen.
When André arrived in 1998 he realised they would have to replant to remove the leaf roll virus in the vineyard. The story goes ''a 1.5 ha block of Cabernet Sauvignon infected with leafroll virus was deliberately established in the original planting period of 1987 to 1990 to provide Vergelegen with a “greenness” then thought to be the hallmark of high-quality Stellenbosch reds''. There are now 120ha of virus free vines but as the new vines gained age André also was nearing retirement. So these last few vintages really are the ones when he got to work with the best fruit.
The new vintage post André is 2021 and the last complete UK vintage seemingly was 2018. We don't think there will be any 750ml bottles of 2019 in the UK.
