Alexandra McFarlane is one of South Africa's most exciting young winemakers, with a passion for the country's heritage grape varieties. Tuesday's Child is her elegant take on Cinsault, sourced primarily from old vines planted in the 1960s in Darling, with a small addition of Grenache adding extra freshness and structure. Gentle winemaking, including natural fermentation, foot treading and ageing for 10 months in large old French oak barrels, allows the fruit and vineyard character to take centre stage. Only eight barrels were produced, making this a wonderfully small-scale wine that showcases just how refined South African Cinsault can be.
Fragrant and beautifully expressive, this is a wonderfully elegant red packed with bright raspberry, red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, complemented by hints of Turkish delight, sweet spice and cracked black pepper. Light on its feet yet full of flavour, the palate is silky and fresh with fine, gently grippy tannins that bring definition and length. Juicy, vibrant and effortlessly drinkable, it's a wine that rewards a slight chill and pairs brilliantly with charcuterie, grilled pork, roast chicken or Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
