A textured, expressive white blend from Kalmoesfontein in the Paardeberg region of the Swartland, South Africa, produced by Adi Badenhorst at A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines. The estate is known for its dry-farmed bush vines, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a hands-off approach that prioritises site expression. The vineyards sit on decomposed granite soils, helping to deliver both concentration and a distinctive mineral edge.
Typically a field-style blend of old-vine Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc with smaller proportions of Rhône varieties such as, Viognier, Palomino, Verdelho, Muscat of Alexandria, Roussanne, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Clairette Blanche and Harsevelu. It's aged for about 20 months in old French oak foudres and 500L barriques giving a layered and complex wine.
On the nose there are aromas of ripe pear, yellow peach, citrus oil and dried herbs. The palate is generous but focused, showing stone fruit, baked lemon and subtle honeyed notes balanced by firm acidity and a saline, granitic undertone. Textural and slightly waxy in feel, it finishes long, savoury and gently nutty, with the wild, earthy signature typical of Swartland whites.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
