From South Africa’s Swartland, Bok Amok is a characterful Grenache made from organically farmed bush vines planted in 2006. The name refers to the duiker antelope that roam the vineyards and have a particular liking for Grenache grapes. The fruit is hand-harvested and naturally fermented in concrete before spending around ten months in old French oak. The result is a fresh, fragrant and gently savoury red that puts the emphasis on bright fruit rather than heavy oak or alcohol. A lovely example of the lighter, more elegant side of South African Grenache.
Tasting note
Bright red berries lead the way, with raspberry, cranberry and red cherry, alongside hints of rose petal, wild herbs and white pepper. The palate is fresh and lively, with juicy fruit, fine, gently grippy tannins and a savoury edge. There’s plenty of character without excessive weight, finishing dry, fresh and lightly spicy.
