As one of the early pioneers in the Swartland, Charles Back established Spice Route in 1998 after discovering an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and immediately purchasing the land on which it was grown. Tim Atkin MW, who awarded the winery ‘Cru Bourgeois’ status in his 2019 South Africa Classification, credits Back for elevating the region and putting it on the map.
The Chenin Blanc used in this vintage comes from vines planted in 1978 in the Swartland, benefitting from a south-east facing slope and dry farming techniques which result in small, thick-skinned berries. These vines thrive in the koffieklip soil, a unique blend of decomposed granite and iron-rich clay known for producing bold and concentrated wines.
