Viñedos Hontza was established in 2015 as a family venture with the intention of showcasing through their wines the true essence of the terroir. Their wines are certified organic and produced according to Biodynamic principles, and using minimal intervention in the winemaking process.
Grown in the clay and limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa in the Basque region, this skin-contact white is a blend of Viura and Calagreño—an almost extinct aromatic variety—macerated on the skins for eight days. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with minimal intervention in steel vessels, followed by aging, with 50% of the wine maturing in chestnut barrels. Left unfined and unfiltered, this wine exemplifies the skin-contact style of Basque wines, offering a bracing mix of minerality, floral and citrus notes, a subtle salinity, gentle tannins, and zippy acidity.
