Produced by Fonseca in the Douro Valley, the 2024 marks a rare classic declaration—the house’s first in seven years and one of its smallest releases to date, made from an exceptional but limited harvest.
Fonseca is known for its opulent, aromatic house style, built from fruit sourced across its key quintas, including Cruzeiro, Santo António and Panascal, planted on schist soils that contribute structure, depth and mineral complexity. The 2024 vintage follows a growing season that delivered balanced ripeness and freshness, resulting in a classical expression with both power and precision.
As with all Vintage Ports, fermentation is short and intense before fortification, with the wine spending only a brief period in wood before bottling unfiltered for long-term ageing.
Tasting note:
The wine shows a deep, opaque purple colour with a violet rim, opening with an intense and layered nose of black cherry, cassis and blackberry, lifted by violet, wild herbs and a hint of mint freshness.
On the palate it is full-bodied and richly structured, with dense, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity providing tension and longevity. Flavours of dark berry fruit, plum and subtle spice are supported by a distinct schist-driven mineral core, giving clarity and definition. The texture is powerful yet polished, with the hallmark Fonseca richness balanced by freshness. The finish is long, concentrated and expressive, with lingering floral notes, dark fruit and spice.
A benchmark Fonseca, combining intensity, aromatic richness and structure, built for extended ageing—capable of evolving for decades while already showing striking purity and depth.
