Made by Jessica Saurwein, Nom comes from the Kaaimansgat vineyard in South Africa’s Elandskloof Valley, where Pinot Noir grows at around 700 metres above sea level. Planted in 2008, the vineyard has shale soils, granite in the topsoil and clay beneath, giving the wine its distinctive combination of concentration and structure. The grapes are hand-picked and naturally fermented, with the wine spending ten months in French oak barrels. Produced in small quantities, Nom is a more powerful, savoury expression of Pinot Noir, balancing ripe fruit with freshness, fine tannins and a distinctive mineral edge.
Tasting note
An expressive nose of red cherry, rosehip and orange peel, with hints of cocoa, white pepper and earthy spice. The palate is generous and concentrated, with ripe red and dark berry fruit, savoury undertones and a touch of umami. Smooth, finely textured tannins and fresh acidity keep everything in balance, leading to a long, persistent finish. A Pinot Noir with real depth and character, combining generosity with structure.
