Hacienda El Ternero is a historic estate in Rioja Alta, with origins dating back to 1077, when it belonged to the Monastery of Santa María de Herrera. The winery is set within a rural enclave surrounded by its own vineyards, close to the Obarenes mountains. Its elevated vineyards and distinctive location contribute to the fresh, balanced style of its wines. The estate combines this long history with a modern approach to winemaking, producing wines that express the character of the region.
Made from 100% Viura, one of the traditional white grape of Rioja, this wine combines ripe fruit with the added texture and complexity of oak ageing. The grapes are carefully selected and pressed, with fermentation and subsequent ageing taking place in new French oak barrels. The wine spends six months on its fine lees, helping to develop a creamy texture and greater depth while retaining freshness.
Tasting note
A generous, rounded white Rioja with plenty of character. Aromas of ripe pear, baked apple and pineapple are complemented by notes of almond blossom, vanilla and freshly baked pastry. The palate is full and creamy, with layers of tropical fruit and stone fruit balanced by lively acidity. French oak adds gentle toast and spice, while the long finish brings everything together neatly. A lovely example of how Viura can deliver both richness and freshness.
Excellent with roast chicken, grilled fish, scallops, seafood risotto or creamy pasta dishes. It also works well with Manchego and other mature cheeses.
