50 Years On: The Judgement of Harrogate Blind Tasting, Friday 17th July, 7pm - 9pm

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Judgement of Paris, we're recreating a mini version of one of the most influential wine tastings in history – and it promises to be a fascinating and enjoyable evening.

The original Judgement of Paris took place in 1976 and changed the wine world forever. Organised by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier, the blind tasting saw top French wines go head-to-head with relatively unknown Californian wines. To the surprise of the French judges, California came out on top, with Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beating some of France's most prestigious wines. The result transformed the reputation of New World wines and proved that world-class wine could be made outside Europe's traditional wine regions.

Staying true to the original format, we'll taste blind three Chardonnays followed by three Cabernet Sauvignons. One wine in each flight will be from the USA, one from France, and for a little extra intrigue we'll add a third "curveball" wine from elsewhere in the world.

All of the wines will be of a similar quality – we're not trying to catch anyone out. This isn't a competition and there are no right or wrong answers. It's simply a chance to explore some superb wines, compare styles and discover your own favourites in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Nick Fisher aka @Burgundynick will host the evening, offering some gentle guidance on how to approach blind tasting and what to look for in the glass. Once everyone has made their choices, we'll reveal the wines, discuss what we've tasted and see how perceptions compare.

After our own "Judgement", we'll continue the evening with glasses of wine served alongside generous artisan cheese and charcuterie boards, giving everyone the chance to relax and enjoy the wines in good company.

All of the wines featured during the tasting will also be available to purchase on the night, with an event-only discount.
