There are some super exciting wines coming out of Swartland right now and Eben Sadie has been at the heart of this resurgence, putting Swartland firmly back on the wine map. This wine is made from a parcel of old bush vine Tinta Barocca planted in 1974. Tinta Barocca was originally brought to South Africa from Portugal to make a version of Port but now it has flourished as a red wine because of its own special qualities. Deep aromas of black plums, blackberry and Morello cherry with accents of cranberries, rose petals and smoke. This wine is reminiscent of a Nebbiolo from Piedmonte. The palate feels restrained with bags of potential but manages to show some ripe dark fruits, leather, gravel, garrigue herbs along with some meaty and floral overtones.
