Thursday 27th November 7pm - 9pmWe’re excited to host a special evening with the wines of Royal Tokaji, one of Hungary’s most prestigous producers. The evening will be led by Christopher Donaldson MW from Royal Tokaji.
Tokaj has one of the most extraordinary stories in the world of wine. For centuries it was prized at the highest tables in Europe. Louis XIV of France called it “the wine of kings, the king of wines.” Catherine the Great valued it so highly she stationed Cossack guards in the region to protect the vineyards and ensure safe passage to St Petersburg. Napoleon III ordered barrels every year for his court.
During the 20th century the wine region went into steep decline due to the Phyloxera outbreak, two World Wars and the subsequent Soviet era collectivisation.
After Hungary gained its independence, the wine region was brought back to life, partly due to the influence of renowned British wine writer and historian Hugh Johnson. In 1990 he joined forces with local growers to found Royal Tokaji. Working with some of the region’s finest classified vineyards – including Betsek, Mézes Mály, and others it is now one of Hungary’s most lauded producers.
Known for making both the golden, honeyed Aszú wines that built the region’s fame and also championing vibrant dry whites made from Furmint and Hárslevelű.
This tasting will explore the history, the vineyards and the breadth of Royal Tokaji's range, from crisp dry whites to layered, complex sweet wines.
To complement the wines, we’ll be serving charcuterie and cheese sharing boards alongside the tasting.
We'll gather around large tables and start the evening with an aperitif, then settle in for the tasting.
