Yalumba’s ‘Fine and Rare’ Wine Flight, From The Heart Of The Barossa, Friday 13th May

Yalumba’s ‘Fine and Rare’ Wine Flight, From The Heart Of The Barossa, Friday 13th May

A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to do an online tasting with Yalumba and were lucky enough to taste their exclusive Fine and Rare range of wines. These are the pinnacle of what Yalumba aims to achieve. We must say we thought they were sensational!, What impressed us most was, though Australian in style, the wines showed great elegance and refinement.

With over 170 years of experience in winemaking Yalumba is still a family run business owned by the Hill-Smith family. It  was founded in 1849 in Barossa by Samuel Smith, three generations later his great grandson Fred Caley-Smith set sail on a scientific voyage of discovery and bought back progressive horticultural theories which laid the foundations of sustainable viticulture and winemaking that is evident at Yalumba today.

This wine tasting is untutored and informal allowing you to taste at your leisure. You will receive an aperitif on arrival followed by a flight of 5 wines from Yalumba accompanied by a sharing board of charcuterie and cheese. Full tasting notes on your table will give you background information and space to note any of your own observations. We will be milling around pouring wines and are on hand to chat or answer any questions.

We can’t wait to share these with you, so if you’re a fan of Aussie wines or would like to give them a try, call us on 01423 522270 or email  andy@harrogatewines.com to book your place.

The Tasting

Aperitif:

2015 Jansz Tasmania Vintage Cuvee - Jansz is also owned by the Hill-Smith family.  This Tasmanian sparkling wine is crafted from the finest blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on their estate vineyard at Pipers River. Select barrel fermentation and four years of lees ageing provides this wine with the complexity, creaminess and real refinement.

Flight:

2019 Yalumba Virgillus Viognier, Eden Valley.

Handpicked and wild fermented in French old oak. Layers of complexity, richness, textures and flavours.

2018 Yalumba Tri-Centenary Grenache.

Handpicked from old gnarly bush vines in the heart of Barossa valley. A stunning wine with great concentration of flavour.

2016 Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

A classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. A full-bodied wine complemented with a long, flowing, precise tannin profile.

2016 Yalumba The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon.

This estate vineyard is on the famous Coonawarra terra rossa strip, an ideal location for growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon; and this is great Cabernet with intense varietal expression of berries and sea spray, held together by taut grape and oak tannin.

2016 Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz.

Their flagship shiraz from vineyards dating way back to 1854: which makes them some of the oldest Shiraz plantings in the world!  A blend of grapes from the Barossa Valley and from Eden Valley. Barossa Valley Shiraz provides richness, density and concentration, while Eden Valley Shiraz provides the exotic aromatics and smooth palate structure. A distinctive wine with richness and dark berry compote on the palate. Beautifully balanced and refined.
