Originally planted in 1953 by Otty Hayne while visiting his grandfather, this historic vineyard is one of California’s most revered sites for Petite Syrah. The vines are head-trained, dry-farmed, organically grown, and entirely hand-harvested, producing fruit of exceptional concentration and character.
Set on alluvial, gravelly loam soils in Saint Helena, the wine expresses both power and longevity. In its youth, it is deeply inky, intense, and structured; with age, it evolves into a more refined, elegant expression while retaining remarkable depth. This is a wine built to endure—likely outliving generations.
Fermented with native yeasts, the wine is aged for 18 months in barrel (80% used oak, 20% new; predominantly French oak with a portion of American). It is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its full integrity.
Black plum, black cherry, graphite, cocoa, freshly turned earth, petrichor, ink, and gravel dust. Deep and intense yet extremely well-balanced and approachable. Drinks perfectly now with a quick decant, but will age seemingly forever if stored properly.
