The 2022 Porseleinberg Syrah is sourced from a single, north-facing vineyard in the Porseleinberg site of Swartland, South Africa, planted on shallow, stony soils over decomposed granite and schist. The grapes were harvested by hand at full physiological ripeness, with a focus on low yields to maximize concentration. Fermentation was carried out using predominantly whole-bunch clusters, and the wine was aged in large neutral French oak foudres and concrete tanks for approximately 12–14 months to preserve varietal purity and freshness while allowing integration of structural elements.
The wine exhibits a deep ruby color, with primary aromatics of blackberry, plum, dark red berries and Mediterranean herbs, complemented by secondary notes of white pepper, subtle spice and floral hints. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with chalky, fine-grained tannins, moderate alcohol, and vibrant natural acidity that provides balance and lift. A pronounced mineral thread reflects the stony Swartland terroir. The finish is long, precise, and focused, and the wine is considered suitable for medium to long-term cellaring, capable of developing additional complexity over 8–12 years.
