Old school, cult classic and a wine that released its 100th vintage wine in succession with the 2022 vintage and that wine is of course the Alto Rouge.
The first vintage of this wine was produced in 1922 and, after being aged, all was exported to the United Kingdom. Following its success there, it was released in South Africa in 1933 and has been a well-known local wine ever since.
This dark ruby red is a blend of five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The exact mix changes each year based on the growing conditions, but it’s always led by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Shiraz.
Alto Rouge remains a staple in South African wine history and continues to be a popular choice for red wine drinkers. It's well-suited for everyday enjoyment, yet also has good ageing potential.
This always was and still is great value wine from South Africa.
