“Vertente” means “aspect” or “hillside” and most of the grapes come from old vineyards aged between 30 and 60 year old from Quinta de Nápoles and Vale do Pinhão. The resulting wine then spends 22 months in French oak barrels and is excellent value and a great introduction the the awesome range of Niepoort.
This wine pours a lively ruby red in the glass. On the nose, you get a mix of ripe red fruits like cherry and plum, with a hint of darker blackberry. There’s a subtle floral lift, plus a touch of black pepper and a faint stony, mineral edge.
The palate is smooth but lively — medium to full-bodied with bright acidity that keeps it fresh. Tannins are fine and well-knit, giving structure without being harsh. Flavours echo the nose, adding in a little spice and earthiness that keeps things interesting.
The finish is long and clean, with the fruit and minerality carrying through. It’s polished yet still has that rustic Douro character.
Pairs well with red meat, charcuterie and strong soft cheeses like Camembert.
